What happened in the last 3 months of 2010: October: Ø Draw Party of the “2011 Carvoeiro Clube de Tenis Club Championships” on the 22nd October. This year the Championships counted with 303 entries and 23 draws! The members brought all sort of delicious home-made dishes, there was live music, Graeme presented the most spectacular, impossible and hilarious matches of the draws and everybody had a good time. Ø Kick-off for the matches was on the day after the draw party and already quite some matches were played. Ø Sadly and far too early, David Atkinson passed away. As tennis was David’s favorite hobby, it is somehow comforting to know that he spent his last moments on court, enjoying this fantastic sport. Therefore, Inge took it upon herself together with the club’s management, to organize a Mix & Mix Doubles Tournament as tribute to David, so all his tennis friends and club members could enjoy a nice afternoon with good tennis. This happened on the 26th October. November: Ø Stephen Faustino (known to most of our members as Stevie Jones), went to Porto where he participated in a training course for coaches, Level 1, by the Portuguese Tennis Federation. And………he passed the exams! Congratulations Stephen, you are now a fully acknowledged coach, level 1 FPT!!! Carvoeiro CdT management, coaches and staff welcome you on board and are confident that your pupils will enjoy your lessons. Ø 20th November: The Mini Club Championships were held, organized and refereed by Charles, Graeme and Serge. There were some tight matches, all of them were played following the official rules of the under ten’s regional circuit. It was a good championship with all of the minis playing great tennis and the audience having a nice time watching them putting on a real show. The big (!) final remained to be played on the same Sunday as all the other Club Championship Finals. December: Ø The Finals of the Club Championships were planned for the 5th December. Due to many days of heavy rainfall, a lot of matches were behind schedule, it was therefore decided to postpone the Big Finals Day till the 12th December. The club’s staff had busy times, keeping track of who played, who didn’t, organizing outstanding matches, seeing to it that all draws were updated, calculating the outcome of each match and with that preparing the ranking board which had to be ready on the Finals Day. In the meantime Katja had to go to Germany and Stella had to undergo an operation, so both of them were actually glad that the finals were postponed till the 12th, otherwise they could not have been present on that day, nor would they have been able to prepare the ranking board. (so in this case, the rainy days were welcome) Tess and Stephanie were going through their first “Club Championships Nerve Wrecking Weeks” and helped bravely wherever they could, learning a lot, so next year they will be running the 2011 Club Championships on their own! J Ø Thanks to Graeme’s fantastic planning and refereeing, the Finals Day was a big success. This year’s finals received a lot more spectators and supporters which contributed to a great atmosphere the whole day through. Ø Elke prepared a delicious German winter stew and nice hot mulled wine and also managed to play her final. Well done Elke. Ø In the two days before the 12th, Valentina was up in Lisbon to play in the Masters of the Copa Iberica Circuit, for which she had qualified. Very good Valentina! Fortunately she managed to come back early on the Sunday morning and played the Ladies Doubles Final. The Singles Final took place a few days later. |
